This image is a reimagining of “The Irascibles”, a photograph which only included one single female artist, Hedda Sterne. No other female artists from the AbEx movement were included, everyone else in the photograph is a male artist - Red Grooms decided to rewrite history with this print.

This monotype is part of a larger body of monotypes inspired by the “Ninth Street Women”, Abstract Expressionist painters Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Grace Hartigan and Elaine de Kooning.
